Use to maintain magnesium levels or increase magnesium during times of heavy work or stress. Magnesium chloride, when applied topically, is transdermally absorbed and has an almost immediate effect on chronic and acute pain.

Magnesium and the Athlete

Research reveals that muscle endurance and total work capacity, declines rapidly with nutritional deficiency in the area of key minerals like zinc and magnesium. Magnesium is essential to a diet for athletes under a lot of stress.

We can link continual stress and excessive amounts of lactic acid in the muscle to higher levels of anxiety. Horses loose large amounts of magnesium when a they are under stress. However, when we apply magnesium chloride to muscles topically it promotes the release of lactic acid from the muscle tissue.

The combination of heat and magnesium chloride increases circulation and waste removal. We can apply this principle during training and before and after competition. Magnesium chloride bath salts are similar to Epsom salt baths, but much stronger. A magnesium chloride bath helps draw inflammation out of the muscles and joints.

About transdermal magnesium chloride mineral therapy

Transdermal magnesium chloride mineral therapy enhances recovery from athletic activity or injuries. A whole new world of equine sports medicine is going to explode onto the scene when owners and trainers find out that magnesium chloride from natural sources is available for topical use. We can now treat injuries, prevent them, and increase athletic performance all at the same time.

Transdermal magnesium chloride mineral therapy is ideal for equine athletes who need high levels of magnesium or are trying to overcome a shortfall. Horses may not efficiently absorb oral magnesium and at high doses and it might create loose manure. Oral magnesium also has little to no application in the treatment of injuries and tired, worn out muscles. This is where transdermal application achieves the maximum therapeutic benefit during periods of heavy athletic activity.

Transdermal and oral magnesium can be used safely in conjunction in increase or maintain proper magnesium levels.

  • Increase flexibility by allowing the muscles to fully relax
  • Increase length of stride
  • Increase oxygenation
  • Helps to dissipate lactic acid
  • Helps to relieve muscle soreness and cramping
  • Decrease post competition pain
  • Decrease anxiety
  • Decrease muscle and mental fatigue

The composition of the brines is distinct, comprised mainly of magnesium, potassium and calcium chlorides, as well as a high level of bromides, making it an extremely therapeutic and soothing treatment for the whole body.

1 cup of magnesium flakes delivers approximately 15g of elemental magnesium.

Directions for use:

To use, dissolve 2 cups of Magnesium Mineral Bath in a 2 gallon bucket of warm water. Get horse wet, scrape excess water off. Sponge entire contents of bucket all over horse concentrating on neck, back and/or areas of strain or soreness. Leave on for 20 minutes and rinse. Do not restrict access to water.

Temperature of the water should be warm but not hot. Hot water causes the skin to eliminate rather than to absorb.

*Please Note: After application you may notice a slight salt-like mineral residue is left when it dries. This is normal, especially in dry climates or heated indoor areas, and also varies with how much you are applying at one time. After 20 minutes, the majority of the magnesium ions have been absorbed and you may rinse off the mineral residue. Wiping the skin off with a damp washcloth is also an acceptable method.

Expert Opinions

“The form of magnesium which the human metabolic system recognizes and assimilates most readily is magnesium chloride, the same form contained in seawater, but very few nutritional supplements on the market today include this type of magnesium. And the simple secret to the proper administration and optimum assimilation of magnesium is to apply it topically, i.e. via the skin, not as an oral supplement.”
- Daniel Reid, leading authority on Eastern Medicine, and author of The Tao of Detox

“The therapeutic value of magnesium as a transdermal application reaches well beyond the potential of dietary magnesium. Transdermal therapy effectively saturates the tissues, delivering high amounts of magnesium to where we need it most, directly into circulation.”
- Dr. Mark Sircus, Ac., OMD, author of Transdermal Magnesium Therapy
